Movie Tribute to Raymond Chandler: The Big Sleep

Thursday, 9:00-10:30 PM
Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall star in Raymond Chandler’s classic 1946 film noir The Big Sleep. Bogart plays Chandler’s iconic shamus Phillip Marlowe, who is hired by the head of a wealthy family to protect a wayward daughter. He’s soon enmeshed in a plot so twisty that even Chandler had a tough time keeping track of it. If you like your dialogue sharp and knowing, and your murders spiced with blackmail, join Margaret Dumas, author of the Movie Palace Mysteries, for this special showing of The Big Sleep.

Call for Volunteers: Have Fun and Be Involved

Left Coast Crime is put on by volunteers. That means YOU can be involved — in fact, we need your help. There will be a volunteer table at the convention for people to take part in the event in a number of roles, such as panel monitors who hold up signs so the panel moderator knows how much time is left before the end of the program, and escort the panelists to the signing space after the panel. Registration tables need people to be there to hand out info and answer questions. We need you to sign up. The good news is it is easy — and fun! It’s the best way to get to know people and get involved. Email Christine Van Such, our Volunteer Chair at volunteer.lcc2020@gmail.com.

Email Lucinda Surber if you would like to help with Book Bag Staging on Tuesday afternoon (unpack books from boxes) and/or Book Bag Stuffing (fill and carry book bags) on Wednesday morning.

Book Room Info For Authors

Check out LCC Book Room booksellers Mysterious Galaxy, Cross Genre Books, James D. Keeline Bookseller, and La Playa Books information and hours on our Book Room webpage.

Mysterious Galaxy will be handling the majority of sales of books published by traditional publishing houses available at industry standard terms of discount and returnability. Please email Jackie Jou at jackie@mystgalaxy.com if you have any questions about the titles you prefer to have represented at the conference (no more than three) by Thursday, February 6.

Mysterious Galaxy will also handle consignment sales for the authors who publish their works through alternate avenues that are not available at industry standard terms of discount or returnability. Authors will need to bring or ship their own books to the convention. Please email Jackie Jou at jackie@mystgalaxy.com to request consignment policy terms and materials. Consignment titles must have a price listed on the book or a price sticker for those books that do not have a listed price or a different price than listed on the books. Consignments are accepted at the rate of 60% for the author and 40% to the bookseller. At the end of the convention authors will need to pick up any unsold books.

Questions about the Book Room? Email Book Room Chair Maryelizabeth Yturralde at books.lcc2020@gmail.com.

Left Coast Crime Events

At Left Coast Crime 2020 we are offering our usual four opportunities outside the normal panel and book signings for authors and readers to interact.

Meet the New Authors Breakfast

Authors who have a first mystery, crime, thriller, or suspense novel published between January 1, 2019, and March 15, 2020, and did not present last year at LCC 2019 in Vancouver, are eligible to present at the Meet the New Authors Breakfast, Friday, March 13th, hosted by Mike Befeler with the assistance of Rochelle Staab.
New Authors: Email Mike Befeler with your title and publication date
Participants: All LCC registrants are welcome.

Author Speed-Dating

Author Speed-Dating will take place Thursday March 12, from 9:00–11:00 AM, before the panel programming begins, and is a fun way for authors to connect to a new set of readers. The time frame and setup allows 40 authors to circulate in pairs while fans relax and enjoy the 2-minute pitches. Les and Leslie Blatt will be our Speed-Dating Hosts.
AuthorsOur Speed-Dating roster is now full and all participating authors have been notified. Email Lucinda Surber if you would like to be placed on the Speed-Dating Waiting List.
Participants: Seating limited. First come, first seated!

Author-Hosted Tables

Partner with another author to host a table at the Lefty Awards Banquet on Saturday, March 14th. Convention attendees will sign up to sit with you at dinner. Table favors optional.
Authors: Confirmation emails have been sent to Author-Hosted Co-Hosts who responded to the last newsletter. There are many tables still available. Email Lucinda Surber with BOTH of your names and email addresses. You will receive a return email with all the information.
Participants: When you register, look for the Author-Hosted Table signup sheets near the registration desk. There will also be open-seating tables at the banquet.

Author-Reader Connections

One of the best things about Left Coast Crime is the chance to get to know your fellow readers and writers. But sometimes, during the excitement and flurry of activities, it’s not always easy to find time to get to know each other. These free Author-Reader Connections provide an easy forum for readers and authors to enjoy some time together and may include some special benefits from the authors.
Authors: Author-Reader Connections are open to all authors. Information has been sent to authors who responded to the last newsletter. Email Lucinda Surber for all the details to participate.
Participants: Author-Reader Connections, along with directions for signing up, are listed on our Author-Reader Connections webpage as soon as they are scheduled. Keep checking back for more Connections! Only registered attendees may sign up for Author-Reader Connections. Individuals may sign up for no more than two Connections and no more than one per Author.
