New Mexico Weather 1

On March 13, 2010 · 7 Comments

I received an email from someone interested in attending LCC Santa Fe the other day.  She wanted to know if we had snow in March.  For her, snow was a deal-breaker.  I honestly didn’t know how to answer her.

Thursday morning, there were two inches of snow on my car.  By noon, it was 50 degrees. Welcome to NM in March. Today, it was 65. All the daffodils and crocuses are blooming. I’ve seen mini irises, forsythia, hyacinth . . .

But tomorrow we could be in a deep freeze.

The lesson here is to really watch the weather reports a week before the convention. Santa Fe is 1000 feet higher than ABQ and tends to have slightly more winter-like weather longer than we do.  But there are no guarantees.

cheers,

Pari

The rental car shuttle bus recording at the “Sunport” says 1000 feet, or used to, but of course, that is wrong. I wrote a letter about that once upon a time, but doubt it had any effect.

I think there is a plaque in the plaza at Old Town saying 5000 feet, and the Santa Fe Plaza is, as Elaine said, at 7000 feet, give or take a few. The two airports are closer to 1000 feet apart. SAF is at 6306, ABQ is at 5315. The rental car shuttle bus recording guy was thinking in terms of airports, not city centers. Santa Fe main PO is at 6995, Albuquerque at 4961.

    Kim,
Can you do me a favor and contact me via my website? My email is there.
    Thanks,
    Pari

    Elaine,
Thanks for the more correct info. I was born in ABQ and have always just thought it was 1000 feet. Boy do I feel like a dope .

With weather changing daily, there is hardly a reply that fits. Also, Santa Fe is not 1000 feet higher than ABQ. It’s 2,000 feet higher. We are 7,000 feet in altitude. Best to bring at least a jacket, preferably a coat, in March. But with so many days of sunshine, it’s always beautiful. Elaine

You’re welcome. And, yes and yes! Would love to volunteer.

    Kim,
    Thanks so much.
I’m pretty sure we’ve scared away the lady who doesn’t like snow. People don’t understand that around here the weather is really changeable. We got snow in ABQ yesterday too but by nightfall it was gorgeous and clear again.

See you at LCC 2011? Wanna volunteer to help?

I’m in Santa Fe so thought I’d post an update. Yesterday we got six inches of snow near downtown Santa Fe. Today it’s warm enough that a lot of the snow has melted, and the sidewalks and roads are already clear. That’s *usually* what happens in March – we get a quick snow followed by a quick melt. By Wednesday it will be back in the high 50’s.
