New Mexico Question #4

What film starring Johnny Cash and Kirk Douglas was filmed in Santa Fe?

I’m not linking to anything or telling you the year because that would make this too easy.

Answer to yesterday’s main question: Jan. 6, 1912. Though people have lived in this area for longer than most other areas in the U.S., we’re one of the youngest states in the country.

NM Question #3

On September 2, 2010 · 0 Comments

We’ve got a lot of history here in New Mexico. Indigenous peoples created astounding communities in places like Gila and Chaco Canyon. The Spaniards grew wine here before they did anywhere else in what is now the U.S.

So here’s the question for the day:

When did New Mexico become a state?

Bonus question: Approximately when did people start using the name “Nuevo Mexico” for this part of what is now the U.S.?

Answer to #2:  Santa Fe and Truchas, NM.

NM Question of the Day

On September 1, 2010 · 2 Comments

Where was the movie “The Milagro Beanfield War” filmed?

And a personal discussion question: Have you seen the movie or read the book?

BTW: If anyone watched last week’s GREAT FOOD TRUCK RACE on The Food Network, it was filmed in Santa Fe –some scenes in the Plaza actually show our convention hotel, La Fonda, in the background. You can find Episode 2 online, so I won’t link here. But the chill in the air? Think Santa Fe in late March.

NM Quiz Question #1

On August 31, 2010 · 2 Comments

I’ve been writing this blog for awhile and don’t have a sense whether people are reading it or not.

I do know that it’ll become more vital as we get closer to the convention. For it to be really effective, the conversation needs to start now.  Heck, we’ve only got a little more than six months before this baby hits the runway.

Why not test your NM knowledge? We’ll both learn something in the process and might have fun while we do it.

I hope to ask a different question every day. That’ll be, um, let me get my caluculator here  . . . around 180 or so. Should be doable.

Here’s the first one:

What’s the difference between “adobe” and “abode?”

cheers,

Friday night special program

We’re very excited to announce our Friday night program. We’ll start the evening with a brief  opening ceremony that includes introductions, acknowledging all the awards nominees — the basics.  And . ..  we’ve booked the Ice Mountain Dance Group from Okhay Owinge Pueblo (formerly known as San Juan Pueblo) with wonderful young dancers who will be sure to delight you.

After dinner on your own, thriller writer David Morell will introduce an episode of the television show Route 66 that was filmed in Santa Fe. He’ll be on hand to answer questions and to talk about how watching the very first episode of Route 66 changed his life.

We haven’t set the exact times yet, but wanted you to know the skinny so you can plan to be in town for both.

Or, better yet, get here on Thursday in time for the evening program with Anne Hillerman that I wrote about in my last post.

Thursday Night Special Program

On August 2, 2010 · 0 Comments

Hey all,

We’ve got a wonderful program scheduled for the first night of LCC Santa Fe, March 24, 2011:

Anne Hillerman will be on hand with her husband, photographer Don Strel, to present a slide show of Tony Hillerman’s Landscape. We’ll complete the evening with an informal memorial with members of the LCC writing and fan community sharing their favorite and personal stories about Hillerman.

Please plan to be in Santa Fe for this touching and meaningful beginning to our convention.

Thanks,

Pari

Computer free week

On June 19, 2010 · 0 Comments

Every year around this time, I turn off the computer for a week and try to remember life before I was so dependent on the thing.  I’ll be back in the electronic saddle Monday, June 28.

Until then, please comment on the previous blogs — or send me questions via email — and I’ll respond once I plug in the computer again.

cheers,

Pari

If you could have any New Mexican type of entertainment at the convention, what you would like: NM music (combo of Mexican, NM, TX), Native American dancers, Cowboy music — poetry?
